Special LOUVRE ATLANTA Edition
Updated Friday, Oct. 13 – (Opening October 14)

France’s Ambassador Expects Louvre Atlanta
to Strengthen Franco-American Ties

Jean-David Levitte, France’s ambassador to the U.S., got a preview of the Louvre Atlanta’s “Kings as Collectors” exhibition that launches the 3-year partnership on Saturday, Oct. 14.

Mr. Levitte told GlobalAtlanta in an interview on Oct. 5 before the tour that he feels as if he needs to return to Atlanta from Washington every six months to keep up with the city’s growth and activities. This was his seventh trip to Atlanta since assuming his post in December 2002.

He said that the Louvre Atlanta collaboration would be important to the future of both the High Museum of Art and the Musée du Louvre as well as representing a new tie in Franco-American relations.

Mr. Levitte also thanked Anne Cox Chambers for her patronage of the collaboration. Ms. Chambers lives both in Atlanta and France and the interview was filmed in the new Anne Cox Chambers wing of the High.

The High’s director Michael Shapiro and the Louvre’s director Henri Loyrette shared their excitement about the opening at an introductory reception for the exhibition to which the local press was invited.

Terry Stent, chair of the High’s board of directors, who played a critical role in raising funds for the expansion of the High and for the exhibition, introduced the sponsors. Mark Hawn, a senior executive with the consulting firm Accenture, spoke of his company’s Web support for the project.

GlobalAtlanta also interviewed Christiane Fischer, CEO of AXA Art Insurance Corp., about her company’s role in overseeing the transportation of the objects across the Atlantic Ocean.
